Municipal Leaders: Develop Faster, Lead Stronger, Build Better
Every week, you’ll get insights and actionable steps to help you navigate personal growth and professional success.

There’s a leadership book that’s been sitting on a lot of shelves for the last decade, passed around in business circles, quoted in locker rooms and boardrooms, recommended by everyone from NFL coaches to Fortune 500 executives.
Most of those recommendations miss the group it was actually written for.
Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle Is the Way draws on Stoic philosophy, specifically Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca, to make a single argument: the obstacles you face are not in the way of your progress. They are the path itself. And if there is a professional context where that idea has immediate, practical, daily application, it is local government leadership.
Think about what municipal leaders actually work inside.
Budgets that are structurally inadequate for the work the community expects. Council dynamics that shift with every election cycle. Civil service systems that constrain how and how fast you can move. Inherited organizational dysfunction that predates your tenure. Public scrutiny of every decision, including the ones made with incomplete information under genuine time pressure. State legislatures that preempt local authority on issues your community worked hard to resolve. The gap between what good governance requires and what the current environment will allow.
Most leadership development content treats those conditions as the backdrop, the context leaders have to manage around before they can get to the real work of leading. Holiday argues something different. Those conditions aren’t the backdrop. They are the work. The constraint isn’t in the way of the strategy. It’s where the strategy happens.
This week inside the MLDC, we’re working through The Obstacle Is the Way as part of the Summer Series: Stories That Shape Leaders. Members are getting daily content built around Holiday’s three disciplines — Perception, Action, and Will — translated specifically into the realities of local government leadership. What it means to see a difficult council dynamic or a budget shortfall clearly, without the emotional distortion that makes it harder to navigate. How to find the move that’s actually available inside the constraint that actually exists, rather than spending energy on the move you wish were possible. And how to build the kind of internal stability that doesn’t depend on the environment cooperating, because in public service, it often won’t.
The leaders who make the most durable impact in this work are almost never the ones who waited for better conditions. They’re the ones who decided — at some specific, identifiable moment — that the messy, constrained, politically complicated version of public service in front of them was the work, and brought their full commitment to it.
If that’s the kind of leader you’re trying to become, this is the week to be inside the MLDC.
