You’ve walked into a difficult conversation fully prepared with the data, the rationale, the well-reasoned argument and you still didn’t get what you needed. The council member wasn’t moved. The union rep wasn’t budging. The community meeting didn’t go the way it should have.

If that’s happened to you, it wasn’t a preparation problem. It was a negotiation problem. And this week inside the MLDC, we’re fixing it.

This week’s MLDC book of the week is Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, a former lead FBI hostage negotiator and one of the most practical thinkers on human communication you’ll ever encounter. Voss spent 24 years in situations where the cost of a bad negotiation was measured in lives. What he learned turned everything most of us believe about persuasion and compromise completely upside down.

His central argument: people don’t make decisions based on logic. They make decisions based on emotion, and then they justify those decisions with logic afterward. Which means walking into your hardest conversations with better data is solving the wrong problem.

The right problem? Understanding what the person across from you is actually feeling, beneath the position they’re holding, and knowing how to work with that reality rather than against it.

This week, we’re unpacking exactly how to do that. Tactical empathy. Calibrated questions. Labeling and mirroring. And on Friday, how to bring all of it into the specific pressures of local government with council dynamics, union negotiations, staff conflict, and community engagement where the stakes are real and the constraints are unlike anything a private-sector negotiation book accounts for.

Five days of content. Built for city managers, county administrators, and department heads who navigate difficult conversations every single day and deserve better tools for doing it.
