Most people assume city and county leadership are the same job, just at a different scale.
They’re not and that’s the tension at the center of today’s episode with Christopher Wren, County Administrator of Newaygo County, Michigan.
After starting in city management, stepping away into the private sector, and eventually returning to lead at the county level, Christopher brings a perspective most leaders never get to see. And his insight is simple, but clarifying:
Cities are built on service delivery.
Counties operate through systems.
That distinction changes how decisions are made, how teams operate, and how leadership shows up.
In a city, the connection is immediate. Residents feel it when the garbage isn’t picked up, when the road isn’t repaired, when water stops flowing. The work is visible, direct, and often urgent.
At the county level, the work is broader and often even more invisible. It’s coordination across jurisdictions. It’s public health, courts, emergency services, and infrastructure that spans hundreds of miles. It’s influence without always having control.
And that requires a different kind of leadership.
In our conversation, Christopher shares what that shift demanded of him:
It’s a conversation that brings clarity to a role most people don’t fully understand…including many who work in it.
If you’ve ever wondered why local government feels so complex or why leadership in this space can feel so heavy, this episode puts language to it.
