Most leaders believe experience is what makes them better. But experience alone isn’t enough.

Some leaders repeat the same year of experience twenty times. Others intentionally learn from every challenge, every conversation, every success, and every setback. Those are the leaders who continue to grow and whose organizations continue to grow with them.

That idea sits at the heart of my latest conversation with Opal Mauldin-Jones, City Manager of Lancaster, Texas.

Opal’s leadership journey began long before she ever stepped into city hall. Growing up on a farm in East Texas, she learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and serving others. A college assignment introduced her to a mentor who would completely change the trajectory of her career, opening the door to a life of public service that has now spanned decades.

Today, Opal is recognized as one of the nation’s most respected local government leaders, but what struck me most during our conversation wasn’t her résumé or accomplishments.

It was her commitment to never stop learning.

Throughout the episode, Opal shares how continuous growth has shaped every stage of her career, from navigating the Great Recession and leading disaster recovery efforts to managing rapid community growth and building a culture that continues to evolve year after year.

One lesson especially stood out to me. Leadership isn’t something you arrive at.

It’s something you continually invest in.

Whether through executive education, professional associations, mentorship, reading, or simply remaining teachable, Opal reminds us that our organizations rarely outgrow their leaders. If we want stronger teams, healthier cultures, and more resilient communities, that work begins with our own willingness to keep growing.

We also explore the importance of intentional strategic planning, cultivating meaningful relationships, mentoring the next generation of public servants, and protecting the personal foundations that allow leaders to thrive over the long haul.

If you’re leading a city, county, department, or team and you’re committed to becoming a better leader than you were yesterday, I think you’ll find tremendous value in this conversation. Because the moment we believe we’ve learned enough may be the moment our leadership begins to decline.
