Hello, Impactful City Leaders!

Welcome to this week’s edition of “The Leader’s Lens!” The most innovative cities aren’t just hiring smart people – they’re mastering how different minds work together. This week, we’ve explored how understanding and leveraging collaborative intelligence can transform your municipality’s effectiveness.

FROM THE FIELD: MUNICIPAL VICTORIES

This week, we’re celebrating Sierra Vista City Manager Chuck Potucek’s recognition as a 2024-2025 Defense Community Champion by the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) in partnership with Navy Federal Credit Union. As one of only 19 leaders nationwide to receive this honor, Chuck exemplifies how collaborative leadership creates lasting community impact.

Through consistent partnership with Fort Huachuca, Chuck’s team has:

  • Developed crucial legislation (Section 321 of the National Defense Authorization Act)
  • Created innovative Intergovernmental Support Agreements for essential services
  • Identified housing solutions for service members
  • Led proactive approaches to military/civilian community challenges
  • Pioneered responsible water management initiatives

As Tourism & Economic Development Director Tony Boone noted, “Chuck’s leadership continues to challenge [City staff] to find more ways to partner with Fort Huachuca.” His recognition builds on a legacy of cooperation, following former Mayor Rick Mueller’s receipt of the same award – who, during his own nomination, insisted Chuck deserved the credit.

A PERSONAL NOTE

This insight from “Collaborative Intelligence” is a foundational key to building a thriving team of unique individuals. Too often, we see different thinking styles as problems to manage rather than assets to leverage. But here’s what I’ve learned: The most innovative solutions emerge when we create environments where different minds can work together effectively.
